FAQs
Canyon Creek FAQs
What is a hybrid tutorial?
We are a homeschool hybrid program, which means that our students are homeschoolers. Our program meets three days a week, with assignments sent home for the other two school days. Parents are responsible for assigning grades and maintaining attendance records.
What subjects do you offer?
We offer a full curriculum, including Bible, Literature, History, Math, Science, Geography, Reading, Spelling, Writing, and Art. We use a modified version of Ambleside Online, which is a free Charlotte Mason curriculum, as well as Orton-Gillingham reading/spelling programs, and Saxon Math.
What is a Charlotte Mason education?
A Charlotte Mason education centers on reading and narrating living books on a variety of subjects. This is a liberal arts education that introduces students to a wide range of subjects.
How challenging is your program?
We teach both skills and a knowledge-focused curriculum in a developmentally appropriate way. We do not push advanced academics on young elementary students. Our kindergarten is play-based, with lots of outdoor time, picture books, and a very gentle introduction to reading and math. Our program has big leaps in 4th and 8th grades. By 7th grade, Canyon Creek students are reading high school level books.
What is distinctive about Canyon Creek?
Canyon Creek is a Christian program. We read scripture, sing hymns, and study church history. The Bible is our standard for faith and practice. We believe, with Charlotte Mason, that children are born persons made in the image of God who have the ability and natural desire to learn.
We also believe that all people are imperfect and need discipline and guidance to grow and mature. Our learning atmosphere is critical to our school’s identity, and we hold our students to a high standard of behavior.
My student has special challenges. Are you equipped to deal with that?
Maybe. We have students at our school with a variety of learning challenges. Some students with dyslexia, ADHD, and autism can thrive here. We are not equipped to address serious behavioral issues. We hold our students to a very high standard of conduct, and we do not have the staff or expertise for students who need help to function in a classroom.
We require parents to disclose any medical or learning issues during the application process, and we can discuss your student’s needs during the family interview to determine whether our program is a good fit.
Do you offer any type of student discounts or scholarships?
No, unfortunately at this time we are unable to offer any type of discount. Our goal is to keep Canyon Creek tuition as low as possible across the board. We hope one day to have the ability to offer discounts.
Are you a forest school?
No. While we strive to spend as much time outside as possible, we also do many thing indoors. Students must wear weather-appropriate attire but if it is below 25 degrees or raining we change our outdoor time. We believe time in nature and time outside are vital for a student's well being and education but it is only part of what makes our program special.
